I made these for myself as examples of what I was teaching yesterday--beads tied on waxed linen thread. The workshop was a lot of fun but my hands hurt today. Four and a half hours is a long time to use arthritic hands.

Cross Stitch Blanket Is Done

All I need now is to put his name and birth date. It was enjoyable but this thermal blanket is not the same plush as the others I've done so I hope the stitches stay in. Working over two spaces was hindered by an awkwardly placed "center" hole so I had to concentrate on placement. I think it's cute. The pattern came from Leisure Arts leaflet #2878 (All rights reserved and copyrighted by Nina for Daisy Kingdom, Inc. 1995.) I've been making jewelry. Our church is having a craft day tomorrow and I'm doing a workshop on making thread bracelets so I just HAVE to practice, you know. Photos tomorrow.

Art Challenge

Relics in Peoria is having an art challenge this year. They are checking out old encyclopedia volumes into which people can put something creative, since the word for the year at Relics is "create." When the year is completed, they will be displayed at a First Friday's Gallery Event and then they will be donated as a collection to the Peoria Historical Society. My submission is a take-off on a Christmas ornament I sold this past Christmas. It's called "And the Angel Said," a title taken from Luke 2:10--'And the angel said unto them, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people." I thought it fitting to place it next to an article about The Shroud of Turin.

I used old lace, white and tea-stained cheese cloth, metallic ribbon, stick-on rhinestones, feathers and a copy of a vintage angel.

Off to finish the cross-stitched blanket since my lunch date was cancelled. I hope to post a photo of it tomorrow.

Flowers and Crystals

Here's the gray and cream necklace I mentioned in my last post. I used a reconstructed new necklace (only $5.00 at a well-known dept. store). They are real faceted iridescent glass beads with wire connections. I removed a couple of the large beads and left the smaller ones in a line onto which I connected the flowers, all made from recycled fabrics. I used new and old beads to decorate them and sewed them on lace. I think it's lovely and I hope someone else does, too.
The little shop in which I have been selling these pretties is closing the end of Feb. Maybe it's time for a change. I think I'll take a little break and clean my art space--not that it needs it, mind you, and certainly not a fun thing to do, but necessary.

I did spend a day on my cross stitch blanket and the other two days I spent making pretties. My oldest son got a "token" card from me. You might say I threw it together but maybe what I placed inside the card will make up for my iffy jiffy art.
I made a bib necklace of pinks and creams and placed it on the side of a pearl necklace. I just sewed the roses on lace fabric backing, cut around the lace and literally sewed the whole piece on the necklace. It worked and I like the way it looks and it wears well. (Yes, I do try out my works sometimes to see if they stay in place and do what I want them to do.)
I was commissioned to rework a sweater. She hated the animal fur trim so I removed all of it and replaced it with a field of flowers. She's the one who purchased my first pink and cream bib necklace and wanted me to do the same thing for the sweater. My next one will be gray and cream with bronze on a crystal necklace--at least that's what's been in my mind. Stay tuned.

I can envision this on a bride wearing a vintage wedding gown. I've used an assortment of different fabrics, old buttons and vintage beads and lace on a new chain. After my first one sold, the buyer was asked about it by her client who came to the shop to buy one. Guess I'll start working on another pink and cream one. It's time-consuming but fun--especially when they sell.

Wedding Necklace

I don't know why but I can't just do one thing at a time. I had been working on the cross-stitch project for two days but the call of knitting and jewelry-making was strong in my heart. My house is a wreck all the time with lurking projects in every corner and on every flat space. If I were ever put in isolation, I think I'd take apart my sweater and create a necklace--or something. I'm obsessed with creating. I love to work at it and I do WORK. Most of the time things don't just fall into place--not for me. It's the rare occasion when that happens. I spent all morning today putting together "wedding necklace." S'more Couture is starting a wedding section and I'm working to fill it, bit by bit. I saw a gorgeous necklace in the background of some fabric flowers photo and I fell in love with it. This is a rendition of it. The top two necklaces are my version of green with gray--seemingly the newest fashion color trend. The second one I actually made for myself. I thought "very long" was a different way to knit a scarf, so there it is. Now, back to the cross-stitching.

Finally Winter

We finally have cold and snow. It's been a very mild winter in central Illinois but a couple of days ago it started to snow. I awoke yesterday to about 6 inches of snow and the wind had blown huge drifts across our yard. It blew snow up against my kitchen window and this is what I saw yesterday morning as I was making my coffee. I was happy to snuggle in and work on my cross-stitch blanket for grandchild #14. He's due in March so I have to turn on the booster rockets to get it done in time. Now, if my fingers will just hold out.

I've had fun the past few days making jewelry. I used new bird charms and vintage glass droplets (except the blackbirds have new beads.) I was wondering what I would do with the glass drops and certainly didn't want to sell them or give them away--and here you have it. I saw the prototype for the bracelets in a ritzy catalogue and decided to give them a try. I think they turned out cute. The birds and the first two chunkies went to Relics. I'm keeping the third bracelet, if I can stand the dangly bird--not much on dangles. It's been a blast. Now I'll be working on a cross-stitch blanket for grandbaby #14 due in March. It will take a while!

As I was making the necklace above, I realized that the components needed to be just a little bit bigger. I'll do that next time. I used old and new beads and vintage glass/shell buttons and crocheted it using a chain stitch with waxed linen thread. I like to wear my necklaces and they're fun and fairly easy to do.

Fluffy Loveliness

I loved making the scarf. The yarn is a blend of nylon and mohair (thus the fluff) and it looks like a little pink cloud. Both the necklace and the scarf can be found at S'more Couture.

My bib necklace pictured below sold last Thursday, just two days after taking it in. I'm so happy. Now I get to make some more! I loved it but my daughter and husband thought it look too "old lady." I call it "Shabby Sophisticate." I guess I know my market; that's all I have to say.

Now for some earrings for Relics and I'm going to try to make some headbands (my style) like some I've seen there before.

Here are the remaining x-large wedding flowers for a backdrop commissioned about two months ago for S'more Couture. The commissioner found the idea on a blog post, The White Wedding by Therese Jacinto. Can anything be more beautiful? dreamy? gorgeous? I don't think we've made enough to cover a whole backdrop but maybe the person can put something together. Sidenote: There's no amount of money offered to get me to make this many flowers--very time-consuming.

The Family Elves

I got to see all of my family this Christmas but we had to really travel a lot to do so and visit two families separately but it was worth it.

My grandgirls got chiffon hair clips but I didn't want to leave out the three-year old grandboy in the presentation so I made a BlHankie (Hankie Blankie) for him. He was thrilled as were the girls. I made enough for them to choose a couple each (I have 5 girls). It's difficult thinking of handmade things for boys--seven of which didn't get anything handmade. They are all over eleven years old so I don't think they missed anything. Purchased gifts were enough for them. I'm going to have to do some research on that one for the future, though.

I presented the quilt I pieced and my husband quilted to our granddaughter and she was adequately pleased. Now, on to quilt #10 with only four more to go after it.

The elves visited my sister's house. The big one is my oldest son. The story of the outfit goes something like this:
The person doing the announcements in church asked for his help and asked him to wear his most "Christmasy clothes." Because of my son's wacky brain, he chose this outfit. Uh-huh. We have a lot of fun at our house.
The littlest elf, quilt-girl, was dressed as herself.

I'm thankful that God allowed all of us to get together. We had way too much food and not enough time but at least we got to hug each other, exchange gifts and talk a little. That's enough to carry me through until we can be together again.

Scarves for neighbor girls

Santa Bags

I've been busy last minute buying, wrapping, arranging and making Santa Bags and scarves--and jewelry, of course. I had this low pile nylon velvety fabric, part of a box I got at a yard sale years ago and I had the perfect amount to make these bags. I had decided not to do stockings for my three kids, their spouses and my 13 grandkids. I knew it was coming eventually but this year, because of my sister's death, my time for shopping, etc. was limited. I went Dollar Treeing and we will grab-bag--women, men and kids. We'll be at my in-laws for Christmas Day and the day after so we're actually adding three more people to the mix. The more the merrier, I guess. I'm looking forward to being with everyone and am hoping to see my AL son and his family next week. Too bad we can't all be together at once but we'll take what we get. Some things can't be changed. I've SO had to be flexible with all the schedule changes that take place with a large family. What will we do when the g-kids get old enough to date and marry? We'll see if the Lord allows. Have a Jolly Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

Another Necklace

I made another necklace. These are getting addictive. Hopefully someone will enjoy it. I've used charcoal and gray beads mixed with silver leaves and beads on black waxed linen thread. I used a silver bead slide as a closure. I have another bracelet, too, that I'll photograph another time. I wrapped presents yesterday for about 5 hours--one needs a lot of time when one has 13 grandchildren. Today I had to exchange a toy at Toy R Us--a scary chore, indeed! They did have another, thank goodness. I also did a Dollar Tree Run--another dangerous journey, for sure. Ho-ho-ho.

I made a little Christmas card in memory of my sister, Peggy, who passed away last month. I've sent it to her daughter, son and husband and I hope it pleases them. It was very difficult to do this today. My emotions took over and I had to make myself complete the task. It took most of the day.

I pieced this quilt about 2-3 years ago--yes, when I can't think of the exact time, it's been too long. My husband quilted it--learned from his grandmother. The quilting design is a rose swag in the corner of each block and around the border. I love this pattern and have made one other like it. This goes to my newly-turned-seven-year old granddaughter for Christmas. I begin another one the first of the year for granddaughter Number Three. Maybe she'll get it when she's seven--maybe even sooner. I'm very happy with this one and hope my little granddaughter will feel the same and like it, too.

I made this little Baby Bl'Hankie, as I call it, for my daughter to give to her sister-in-law. It measures about 11" square and I used a vintage hankie, cute flower and lady bug fabric, and iron-on embroidered lady bug, ribbons and knobby soft plush fabric. I used velcro on the black ribbon to attach a pacifier or teething ring. I've made a couple more pieces of jewelry yesterday and finished the quilt!!! Pictures to come.

The beginning of the week was spent with my daughter and family to celebrate the birth of their five-year-old. We had great fun and the toys I took were a hit. We played "princess" the whole time. In route and while there (during naps--ahhhh), I made these necklaces and bracelets. I don't know where they will wind up but they're ready--maybe a thank you gift, a Christmas present or maybe I'll wear one. Now, on to that quilt I've been putting off binding.

Refashioned T Shirt for Sister

I reworked this plain t-shirt by cutting off the hems of the sleeves and the bottom. I zigzagged the edges of the sleeves and bottom, ruffling them and made roses from the remaining fabric that I attached to the neckline. I added small crystals I gleaned from an antique earring. This one goes to my sister. She had seen my shirt and I asked her if she wanted one. She purchased her own, choosing her color and size and I remade it in a more fancy version. Easy, fun and rewarding.

Yes, I am actually wearing this and liking it. I'll be making some more when I can find a little time. It's been crazy busy around here the past few days and making this for myself was fun. Try it.
One large t shirt, seamless is best--your color choice and plain
Lay flat, cut off bottom hem, cut one inch strips up to arm pit, leaving them "in the round."
Stretch each strip. If they don't stretch then this won't work.
Pick up each strip and lay each single layer in your hand. Hold all like a lasso in your hand.
Using a smaller strip, wrap it pretty tightly around the strips in your hand.
Pin it and tack with matching thread.
Depending on the lengths, you can wear as is or double it around your neck.
I used a small childs shirt and tied the ends together.

I took these photos pre-dawn and they are wanting light but you see, I actually like my artwork enough to use it on my tree. These aren't all I have but they are all that will fit on my narrow little tree. I have other ornaments on my tree, too--mostly vintage and heirlooms. My tiny tree fits right in front of my window and squeezes into a 2-foot square of space--all I have left in my creation-crowded living room. I counted and I have four different projects at work in this small space--nothing new here. Hope your tree brings you joy and directs your thoughts to the Creator of Life.

I've been busy making these crocheted necklaces the last few days in my spare time. I've been working around "Christmas," you know what I mean? Three go to Relics and three to S'more Couture. I looked at a Sundance catalog the other day and these run anywhere from $100-$200 dollars. You won't see these at that price but, of course, I didn't use gemstones either. I like them, though. I used waxed linen thread/cording and another small cord for beading purchased for me by a friend (thank you, Wendy.) I bought the waxed cord from Michaels and some I purchased at a yard sale--good for me.

These are part of a commission. The person wants to make a backdrop to rent for weddings. I have two more very large flowers, 14-20 inches, to make and I've already been paid--though $100 seems small now that I spent 11-12 hours making these. I guess that's about right for a crafter (I'm getting over it because I really like doing these and loving one's job is significant.) I make $30.00 an hour teaching piano and $40.00 an hour teaching organ but I'm totally burned out on teaching keyboard and I've gladly traded it for crafting. Yes, thank you, God.

The little guinea feathered earrings look so cute and hang well. I even made a teeny pair of guineas for me. Now to see if I actually wear them. A couple of friends have challenged me and said if I do they would. We'll see. Us 60-plus-ers have been know to throw caution to the wind. Hmmmm.

The two pair of fingerless gloves I made a while back have sold so the shop owner has requested more. I had purchased a couple more pair just in case and worked them up a few days ago. Hope these wind up under someone's Christmas tree this year.

I had forgotten to take pictures of the last ones I made and though I tried four times, I was unable to create them. I put my creativity on hold until after a good night's sleep and while lying in bed the next morning, I figured out how to do them. I don't think it was the same way but it worked. My sister went home to be with the Lord late last Tuesday night. It was to the point of being a blessing and her family and sisters were past ready to let her go. The funeral service was uplifting and comforting and not sad. We sang her favorite hymns, her favorite Bible verses were read and the pastor delivered the best eulogy I've ever heard. She will be sorely missed. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. God is good in all things.

Thankful Anyway

November 1 a friend of mine decided that every day of this month she would post things for which she was thankful. My sister had been put in the hospital just three days before after having a series of cardiac arrests and things didn't look good. My Thank Tank was very low. Things have only worsened through this last week but I am praising God anyway. I thought I would take a look back and remember things for which I was thankful on the first few days of November 2011.
Nov. 1--My sister's vital signs were normal. Praise God. I was thankful that I was so busy that day and had energy to do the things I had to do.
2--My sister had pneumonia but was still responsive to commands. I was thankful that I was able to take a friend to therapy and was able to cook for Wednesday night dinner at church
3--My sister's eyes were wide and she smiled today. I got a hair cut and it was raining--thankful for all.
4--My sister was much more responsive, actually had physical and occupational therapy, they sat her up on the side of the bed, and her temperature was normal all day. Our spirits were high. I planned a trip to see her. I was able to take my friend to therapy and go to lunch with her. I stayed the afternoon at her house and we had coffee and talked.
5--My sister's tubes were being removed after she proved she could breathe on her own but in so doing, she had another cardiac arrest. Thankfully, CPR brought her back. I was thankful to have the day to clean and sort the many things that lurk around that I had considered selling on eBay or Etsy but realize that I will never sell. We're taking them all to the auction. We made $183 at the last auction.
6--I'm thankful to have the support of my church family and friends. My sister is back to square one with Therapeutic Hypothermia treatments. Still praising God anyway.
7--I'm thankful to have had something to do since my sister was not responding as she did last week. It's still too early to tell but I'm thankful all her vitals are good. I took my friend to her physical therapy session, lunch and coffee.
8--My sister is the same. I'm thankful for a day at home. I'm thankful to do some sorting and cleaning today.
9--My sister is the same. I'm thankful to have a full day, 9:00-- meeting about retirement investments, 11:00-- take friend to physical therapy session, lunch and coffee, 5:00 church dinner, 6:00 Early Service rehearsal, 7:00 choir practice--so thankful to be busy.
10--My sister is the same. I'm so thankful for friends and family. 9:45-- doctor's visit with friend, 11:00 physical therapy session with said friend (a day earlier than last week--friend to move from wraps on legs to heavy duty stockings. That's good news.), during her therapy session Bill and I read to children in a Kindergarten class--Book Buddies (we buy books, read them and then give them to the children. We each have 2 kids.) My friend and I went to lunch, grocery shopped and had coffee afterward.
11.11.11--My sister is the same. I'm thankful that her immediate family is coming to grips with the possiblity of loosing her. I'm there, too. God is good anyway. I'm thankful to be home today. I need the down time and time to do piddly household chores. I'm going with my "therapy" friend to see Aaron Schock and Condoleezza Rice tonight and I'm thankful for that--another thing to keep me busy.

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

He Gives Flowers

Two weeks ago he brought these to me. I don't even know the reason why but he does this on occasion--sometimes for no reason. I love roses and he knows it and these were especially beautiful. It doesn't take much to please me. WalMart roses work very well.
We're back to square one with my sister. She had another cardiac arrest last weekend. She was making such progress but when she was trying to breathe on her own, she struggled and arrested. Not good. She's under Therapeutic Hypothermia again and we will know more tomorrow about her brain function at this point. Prayers are welcomed. I'm needing roses again.....

I drew a little eighth note and put the scripture reference in the back of the book.
Every page has either a sticker, a rub-on, a stamped image, a personal drawing, a writing or a scripture. I hope it brings her some joy. She's a trooper and is doing better--
Praise the Lord for his wonderful works.
Thank you for your prayers as she recovers from a series of very serious heart attacks that happened a week ago.

Treasuring Life

It's been a while since I posted but life has taken a drastic turn. My sister had a cardiac arrrest last weekend and is struggling back to existence. She had to be shocked four times until her heart started beating and that was with her pacemaker inserted two months ago! She's making progress but it will be slow and I'm not able to make the two-day car trip by myself. My husband is leaving for an overseas mission trip next week. I can afford only one plane trip that will probably be when she's allowed to go home so I can help her with her transition back to normalcy. It's so difficult not being there but she has my other sister (a four-hour trip for her), her son (a day's drive and who had to shorten his Germany trip to see in-laws), her husband (an hour's drive away), and her daughter, who had encouraged her Mom to visit early to enjoy her grandson's first Trick or Treat adventure. Fortunately, she was not driving, though she was intending to. Her daughter, with baby in tow in the back seat, was driving when my sister arrested--pretty scary stuff. It brings the thought around again that life is so short and fragile. All I can do is pray-- and she is improving day by day with God's help. Sometimes it takes tragedy to make us realize where God wants us and that's in his palm.

I fulfilled a request from Amy at Smore Couture and made a couple pairs of arm warmers, fingerless gloves, with lace. I used a pair of socks for each and zig-zagged lace around the raw end that had been cut straight across the heel, leaving the finished end on the top. Many of the on-line tutorials suggested the reverse but I think these look better. I decorated each with another snippet of lace and either pearls or black faceted beads. They look really cute on and I realize now that should I want to sell these online myself, I'll have to hire a model for pictures. I have fours Jr high/high school girls in the neighborhood who would make good ones.

This is the last one for a while. I have to let my mind rest and then I come up with new ideas, hopefully. I used a vintage brass drawer pull plate, vintage eyelet lace, vintage tatted lace and a beautiful piece of vintage embroidered chiffon. I cut the word, "Peace," from some holiday ribbon and a lovely cut mother-of-pearl button sits in the center of the plate. Seam binding and sparkly ribbons became the hanger and the picture comes from vintageimagemadness.com.

I used the end papers of an old book for the background of the base and used real feathers for the wings. Her dress is of cheese cloth, gauze and a beautiful vintage net lace. I strung peach seam binding to hang it by wrapping it around a vintage brass brad. Her halo is half of a ruffled piece of gold trim. (Take a close-up look by clicking on the photo, if you desire.) I love her and hope she doesn't sell. If she does, I'll have to make myself another one.

I used a copy of a vintage postcard, vintage eyelet lace, embroidered net laces and lace edging, vintage rosebud trim, vintage velvet ribbon, an old doll dress strip, a piece of a vintage blue rhinestone earring and I added a few other new ribbons to the mix. I'd forgotten how fun it is to create with mixed media.

At last I'm getting my act together and I'm making some Christmas ornaments to hopefully sell in a couple of shops. I love this picture. I believe the real St. Nicholas would have been honored to hold the Christ child if he had been given the opportunity. This picture puts Christmas in perspective for me. I've been having fun making these little cluster pendants--one in bronze and one in silver. I have the bronze one and Deena will have the silver one. I used acorn charms, leaf charms, a green triangular crystal with magenta and gold iridescent sides, a turquoise pearly oblong bead, a small turquoise and maize glass bead, and a gold glass bead. Tiny matte-finished glass beads border the beads on the bronze pendant and silver glass beads border the beads on the silver pendant. I love wearing mine and I'm not a jewelry lover. I also love Fall and wearing this pendant helps me celebrate it.

A black flower joined the two at the top this week--already delivered--and I gave those two to her sisters last night. Little girls are not aware that such things cost money and time to make so I told them they were my models and if anyone was interested, I sell them and to give their friends my info. They won't do that but maybe they will realize that I do this for income--and the joy of giving and maybe they will learn to give to someone else from the kindness of their hearts as well--maybe.

The bottom flower has been sitting around since last summer waiting for me to put a center inside. I've added a vintage crystal cone bead topped with a small pearl, two brass butterflies, a large pearl, a large crystal and a rhinestone sparkle. I used three materials and formed a ranunculus shape. It stands up from the base an inch or so and has a small alligator clip on the felt bottom.

I purchased these beads and a long simple chain last week and made myself a necklace. My aim was to make something Fall-ish to go with a gorgeous pinecone pendant drop necklace a friend gave me. I wore the pendant, these beads and the simple chain together. I wanted the little turquoise dot bead to show more since I was wearing a turquoise sweater and cream shell with brown pants. Now, brown and green are not my colors but I do love brown and turquoise together. It didn't work--too brown, too green. I wore it but was not happy and my "jewelry friends" at church didn't comment on it and they usually say something about what I make, as I do for them. They're sweet but they don't lie and no comments means it was unremarkable--too blah, not interesting enough, no pop--whatever. Look for my remake soon--I hope.

First Wedding Veil

Sadie's happy today and she should be. It's the first time she's modeled a wedding headpiece.

You can hardly see her scars while wearing this little number.

Amy had a girl ask her to make a wedding veil for her and she said, "yes" then called me. Amy's talented but not with the needle. She gave me a veil that had been given to her and I tore everything off, leaving just the nylon mesh around the wire and globs of hot glue. I had the lace pieces, the satiny fabric and the beads. All I had to do was put it together. It took me a few days of thinking about it, then I just began adding stuff. I basically covered the whole form with the lace, made the flowers, sewed them on (quite a feat seeing as I had to work around the glue) and added the beads and tulle. The girl only wanted a shoulder-length veil and this is a little longer than that. It gives us some wiggle room if she wants it shorter--easier to do that than add more, though it could be done with some maneuvering. It was fun to make and took me about 3 hours--not bad for my first ever wedding veil, I think.

Sweet Fall Bouquet

I stepped into the kitchen yesterday for another cup of coffee. My husband had already gone to work but he had left me a surprise. I love the yellow late summer field daisies that spring up from nowhere. He retrieved the last of the summer along with some berries and put them in the first glass his hand touched in the cupboard--a Flintstone jelly glass. It didn't matter to me. This little bouquet took my breath away. Yes, I'm a simple girl.

I finished a little number Monday to put in S'more Couture. I couldn't find peach tulle so I used three colors of layered tulle--gold-tone, pink and cream. Amy had a pile of charcoal sequined stretch stuff for the belt and the peach flower actually came from the dress on the right. I removed the self-ties from the top and added long cream ribbon that Amy tied around the neck--cute. Homecoming for one of the schools is just around the corner so I'm holding my breath to sell the last two tutus.

Here's the finished product from my work last week. Amy had provided the top but it was so tight it wouldn't fit over my smallest sized dress form so I took out the zipper and put in velcro--yes, I costumized it. It worked and looks cute. As I drove by the shop on Sat. I noticed it wasn't in the window. Someone was trying it on and it had been there only a few hours. On the way back I noticed it back in the window and the tie different. I had made the cute little tulle flower clip to be worn as shown or in the hair, on the top or on a purse.

Yes, I know I said I'd never do another one but...

she's given me another little top, quite different but vintage so I'm beginning that today. I still have some shopping to do to match colors on it but photos are forthcoming. I'm inspired because people are interested in these little cuties and I love for the things I make to sell.

Frustration

I made this little skirt today--took me over 4 hours--yep, I'm not a very efficient seamstress having not ever made one before. It had an elastic waist, a slip base and three layers of tulle. The slip and tulle are sewn on the elastic. All went well, though...finally, and a strip of tulle became the tie. Tie about a yard of 2-foot wide tulle, fold in half, tie around waist with on side shorter than the other. Tie the longer side half stopping half way, securing the knot. Fan out the top of the tulle.

This strapless top was given to me to be the top over the skirt. After a round of not being able to get it over my dressform due to the way the zipper was installed, I thought I'd alter the zipper. Wrong decision. I got it down to the threads holding it from moving further, clipped threads and pushed the zipper too far and then OFF the end. If you know plastic zippers, there's no way to recify the situation. Ok, "Make it work." I contemplated snaps, hooks and eyes or frogs. I couldn't find my frogs (they're somewhere in this mess) and opted for the hooks and eyes. Wrong decision. They were too floppy and the top was too tight so there was going to be a gap between them. No, snaps won't work because of the tightness and I can't put in another zipper. I haven't done one of those in years and I actually want this outfit to sell. It will have to be done by a pro so I have to pay $5.00 for her to do it. Last time I needed her, it took 2 months, at least. So, I'm returning the top to the owner. I'll make a flower for a tank top or she can get the zipper fixed--not me. I'm done with altering dresses, etc. now. It's too draining and takes too long and....it's not fun anymore. Yes, I enjoy seeing something old become new again but I'm done--at least for now.

I get great pleasure playing with and reading to these children--ages 4, 4, 2 and 3.

We were celebrating Seth's 3 year birthday with Mommy's homemade cookie dough cake--Yum! Here are six of the nine grandchildren there Labor Day weekend. My daughter and son-in-law dole out the cake and ice cream and my son is getting a second glass of tea. There's always a mystery stirring with "Fork Man"...

Revised Flower Headbands

I made these gi-nor-mous flower headbands for babies a while back at the request of Deb at Relics but she says that people didn't like them because they were too big. They measured about 5" across. I've seen them on newborns and they are adorable but they didn't work at Relics, so....

I cut them back to about 3". Maybe these will work. My little lace covered books didn't go either because the "raw" brown covered back looked like "someone had torn off tags on the back." Yes, they were meant to be that way because I wadded up brown paper bags then glued them to the cover. Oh, well. I covered the backs with lace as well and doctored up the rough places with gel medium. Maybe they'll sell now. Gotta go with what the customer says.

Producing More Feather Dangles

I've had 10 feather dangles at Relics the last two months and all have sold. I made 9 more yesterday and will take them in tomorrow. They're fun and fairly quick to make after I toil over which beads for the dangle part. Too bad I'm not younger.

Remodeled Dress

It all started with a cute little sheath dress with straps and

oodles of these black roses with olive ribbon leaves. As you see, I've removed, with great difficulty, all the roses (each pock mark was a rose) and I underpinned these three to show how it might have looked. Unfortunately each rose was attached with a brad or two so I wound up with a mess.

Here's the finished product. I've removed one strap, closed the back pleat opening, added tulle to the remaining strap, ruched tulle to the bodice and tulle tufts to the bottom of the dress.

I added a removeable feather and rhinestone/pearl brooch that can also be worn in the hair or on a purse. I like it and if I were much younger, would wear it in a minute. I love black anyway. My dresses have been selling at S'more Couture so I keep making them. I love remodeling a vintage dress and making it for today. This one was a late 70's-early 80's Tina Hagen, who was actively making dresses until about 1985 until she went into home decorating. I like the finished product but sometimes the work is difficult. Seeing ones like this make it worth it, though.

We took our Labor Day vacation to meet with two of my children and their children at my in-law's farm.

Corn Field

They're not farming anymore but rent out their land to a neighbor who does, so they are surrounded by corn and beans. It's been a bad year for crops--too wet a Spring and too dry a Summer. This corn, however, looks pretty good and it's normal for it to be drying this time of year. They won't pick it until it's almost all turned brown so the corn will be dry when stored until they can sell it.

Old Family Barn

This barn has been around a long time--probably close to 100 years--but it still holds many hours of fun for my grandchildren.

Little Farmers

Look what they found in the shed--an old pony cart that's still useable, 2011 style. Here are seven of the nine children there last weekend. Two of the oldest were busy cavoting somewhere else. We had a great time. If only we'd added one more child, his wife and their four kids. I'm grateful, though, for every time we get to see any of our children and grands.

A friend of mine gave me these dried seeds/wild flowers about a year ago and I never did anything with them until now. I was forced to because my husband was cleaning the garage and was going to throw them away! I added some sheer pale pink with gold trim ribbon and I think they make a cute little swag decoration for my front door. Happy creating!

Fun Felt

Do you know how difficult it is to adjust early morning blue light? Anyway, here are a couple of cute felt flower clips. Hopefully, they are going to Relics today. I showed my grouping to my friend and she picked one like you see on the right before I was able to get to Relics. I just sat down and made a couple more to fill out my bouquet. It takes about 15 minutes from start to glue. I've used an old metal shank button on the right and some gleaned beads from a yard sale bracelet on the left. Too cute.

Fun Feather Dangles

I bought a bag of feathers at an estate sale as part of a box of lures. My grandpa used to make his own and I guess this person had, too. I'm happy, though when I first purchased them I didn't know what I would do with them until now. Feather hair extensions seem to be the rage.

More Zipper Headbands

I gleaned these colorful zippers from some shirts and pants I purchased at Salvation Army. I paid less for the clothing that I would for the colored zippers at a fabric shop. The black ones have been selling so I thought I'd try these. I think they are cute and if I were much younger, I'd be wearing them. So, to S'more Couture they go. I borrowed this idea from someone who made Christmas ornaments from zippers--pretty cute idea.

New Diagonal Skirt

I cut a vintage table cloth on the diagonal,

hemmed the raw top edge, pleated the side and added a ruffle.

I added twill ties and a snap in the side opening and made a flower of the same color fabric with scraps of the mesh used at the bottom and sewed the flower over the snap closure.

I have to add a couple more snaps to secure the side opening for security when sitting. It turned out ok and I hope Amy likes it. She had the table cloth and idea and I executed her idea. Again--something new from old.

New Baby

Our daughter is expecting her third in March. We're excited to add another little grandchild, making it 14 for us. We're going to have to rent the local meeting hall for our family celebrations but we're ok with that. It's a good thing we're all flexible and able to sleep on the floor because that's what we have to do when we all get together.

I noticed today that my aloe plant, given to me by my daughter and son-in-law, has a little baby, too. It was looking pretty dried out and scrawny two weeks ago but now it's thriving. I haven't watered it in two weeks, holding myself back because it's a succulent and look at the results! I may be able to grow this kind of plant. All of my others seem to bite the dust in no time. Life is great.

My friend's husband died last Sunday--a long time with Parkinson's, one month only in a nursing home (big decision for his wife), two weeks in the hospital, and only four days at home in Hospice care before his death. It's been stressful and I've been busy on the other side of caring for M, my friend, trying to complete projects. I tried to work on the "table cloth skirt" today but I just don't have it in me. I need today to recuperate. Today we found out my husband's aunt died and Bill's to do the funeral--a three-hour trip away--this week. No rest for the wicked, er, uh, weary. Hope you are able to have down time this weekend.

What to do with a full slip

Amy gave me this very old and well-loved black slip with gorgeous brown, yes, brown, lace. Now who would have thought? I separated the bottom from the top at the length I wanted the skirt,...

...attached a black stretch camisole,...

...added a large flower from the slip fabric, the brown lace and a vintage crystals center--VOILE!, a cute and dressy outfit. The slip had been ravaged by wear so I wound up sewing both seams and trimming little toots of threads everywhere. I used the remaining lace from the bodice for the flower along with a strip of fabric from the slip below the bodice. It was the perfect amount.

I think it turned out beautifully and so did Amy. Now on to one more piece I have in my stash from Amy. Tune in for a transformed table cloth.

New Remade Outfit

From this vintage 20's style grey-green silk dress with the inside falling apart, I came up with these looks.

I removed the ruffled skirt, shortening it about 7 rows down from the waist and removed the ruffles from each sleeve. Made a flower from a row of ruffle adding pearls to the center and made a silk tie for the waist (a remnant purchased a couple of years ago.)

The flower is glued to a clip/pin back so it can be versatile--worn either way shown or in the hair.

Here the tie is tied in the front.

I also made a sequin stretch belt giving this a more fancy, dancy look. Hoping it's purchased for Homecoming this year. I'd love to have the money since it took about 8 hours for me to wrestle this. My problem was a stretch waist and a cranky sewing machine. I'm happy with the results so I guess it's worth it ... if it sells

Fall Felt Flowers

My friend has needed me this week; I've cooked for church and her family so I've not had a lot of creating time. Today I hand-enhanced (with Easter egg dyes) some felt and cut out flowers for hair clips. It's a good thing I've been a thread monger. I had every color I needed. Off to bake my bread and visit my friend again. Flowers later.

Three Remakes

This first one started as a zip-up-the-back bustier, probably 60's or 70's vintage with stretchy fabric and stays. I added a black half slip and four tiers of tulle, 3 black and one silver, and made a matching tulle flower with an added grey and iridescent rhinestones brooch.

This little number began as the top only of a voile dotted swiss dress that had been cut off. I added a short skirt with lycra (originally a skort), nylon chiffon overskirt in a bouffant style, surrounded the bottom with a black boa, added a grosgrain ribbon belt and a chiffon and feather flower with three pearls in the center. A while back I showed a photo of the back of the dress after I had paid to have a zipper sewn in. The skirt and top were offset by about 3/4 inch. I sewed the ribbon into the seam of the zipper on the back and made a loop (by chain stitching button/carpet thread) on the other side of the zipper. Four other loops hold the ribbon firmly in place and the offset back does not show. I thought long and hard about that one. Finally, it is done.

This dowdy little half-calf length 50's dress with a cut-out and rhinestone studded neckline would get laughed off the floor at this generation's homecoming dance but...

this one won't! I cute-ed it up a bit by removing the "flower" from the neckline and shortening the skirts. The pink underskirt was under the original dress but I gave it a prominent place by allowing it to be about 1 1/2 inches lower than the top skirt. I added a cummerbund from the left over pink fabric (taffeta) and a matching pink and black flower with a big rhinestone button in the middle.
As you see, I've been pretty busy the last day and a half since our return from vacation. I think all of these turned out very cute and I hope they all sell. Time will tell. Now I need to rest.

Rolled Roses Headbands

These five headbands went to re- today. The shop owner was on vacation and it seems that every third time I'm there she's gone. Her shop must be doing well and I hope it continues to do so. I think these headbands turned out cute and I hope they continue to sell there. Here you see fabric from linen, shoe laces, negligees, t-shirts, blouses, a scarf, a remnant and a dance outfit. I've used mostly vintage buttons and beads with a few newer ones gleaned from necklaces or bracelets. One bead comes from some I bought in Africa last Fall. I love using old things and making them new again.

These headbands went to Relics. She's down to three of my headbands from the 15 I've put in since the first of the year. The fabrics I used are like that above except these also include a flower from a wedding gown, lace and a swatch of a beaded suit. I'm not "big time" but I'm pleased that they are selling, especially since the small business markets are doing so poorly in this neck of the woods. She also took my Fluffed Bible and four of my little journals. She liked one enough to buy it herself and suggested I make more like it. You'll be seeing them in a couple of weeks after I take some time off with my family. I'll also have a dress for S'more Couture to show you. Hope you're keeping cool.

Books, Flowers and Necklaces

These are some of the little notebooks I decorated the last few days. the first two are small purse-sized books and the other is a larger journal-sized book with green edged pages and colored lines.

I used a rusty flat key purchased at Relics last week, old lace, scrapbook paper and I wrote the word "unlock" on a piece of colored paper to give the book a name.

The inspiration comes from Matthew 7:7--
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

On this next book I drew pictures of the same tree in the four different seasons. The scripture I used for inspiration is from Genesis 8:22:

As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”

I entitled this book "Brighten". The many times my friends have brightened my life is endless.
I look forward to seeing my friends at church and in the world and get great joy from visiting with them. This book is a large bound journal with a preexisting bracket for a label. I found an old photo of some obvious friends, adhered it, put the word on some German fraktur print and put it in the bracket, then added some lace to the green border and a green rhinestone once-upon-a-time earring.

I was given a felt flower to reproduce so I looked at how it was made, drew and cut out a template of the pieces, cut them from felt I had in my stash and added beads, pearls or buttons to their centers. The first three (not pictured) I took to Relics, she liked them and asked if I would make some in Fall colors--thus, the flower hair clips you see above. They make a cute wreath. Maybe a wreath will be next....

Finally, from my super-creative last few days, I was able to make two more crocheted necklace/bracelets. Two had sold in the shop and she requested replacements. I love when my things sell (insert deep sigh and smile here).

Mixed Media Revived

I've had a productive morning--creative-wise. I added some hair clips to some felt flowers (photos tomorrow), sewed some rolled flowers for potential headbands and revived my mixed media art.

I used half of an old book cover I've been saving--I guess for this, added a tin type photograph of a well-dressed and warm-looking girl, raised it up with some glued together pages of an old book,

and added a ruffle from a very old piece of wedding veil given to me by Deb at Relics, and some old buttons dangling by waxed linen thread with a couple of matching buttons used to hold the hanger. I added the word "winter" from an old dictionary by gluing it on some burlap. Measuring 8" total from top to bottom and 3" wide, it would make a good Christmas ornament. I know, it's anything but Christmas but I couldn't resist.
I also decorated a book that I'll show you tomorrow as well. What fun!

Caught Red Handed

We knew that there was one squirrel stealing our corn but now I see he has an accomplice. I had to take this photo from my house about 75 feet away and crop it. They are unabashedly on the top of the raspberry stakes where everyone can see them. They don't care. "Just give me your hard-earned labor. I deserve it." Sounds a little red henish to me. My husband is not averse to putting one or two of these in our freezer for winter but he's not here now. They seem to know when he is gone and know they're safe with me. All I can do is scare them off but they will finish their dinners later when I leave. Survival of the fittest is the name. I guess because of lack of rain for weeks (until yesterday) they have been without food in their neighborhood. They do what they have to do, I guess. Hope your life is not that desperate. Mine's not so I'm thankful we got half a crop for ourselves and that's a small plastic sack full. They can't go to the store in the winter and we can. Go for it, little ones!

Back to the Books

...and I don't mean school. I decided to make little scripture-inspired books again. I bought two little brown paper-backed books a while ago and decided (in the middle of the night) to use scripture throughout the book--word-by-word or in groups, randomly placed but in order with the reference at the end. I've used the King James Version since it is considered public domain having been first published in the 1700's
I love this piece of old lace and the brown paper shows through. The scripture used is from Philippians 4:8:

Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

This is the other brown paper-backed book. I've added felt pieces and old lace to it as well. The first few words of the scripture are used on the front and the rest are dispersed throughout. It reads:

Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Matthew 24:35

This is a little coptic book purchased cheaply at a discount store. I've added scrapbook paper, old lace, a mother of pearl button (I think) in a rounded cross shape. I've added the word, beauty. The inspiration comes from Proverbs 31:30:

Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain:

but a woman that feareth the Lord,

she shall be praised.

New Remake

This dress started as a mid-calf paisley slip with beige lace on the bottom. I took off the lace, removed the elastic at the waist, added a tank top, zig-zagged the elastic back on, cut off the extra tank bottom, shortened the skirt and added a ruffle to the shoulder from the strip removed from the bottom of the slip. I chain-stitched three belt loops and added themand the lace became the belt. I've used a vintage mother-of-pearl buckle that I really like. I think it turned out cute and Amy liked it so it should sell.

Fun and Flirty Feathers

Aren't peacocks some of the coolest of God's creations? I wish my photo could have captured the wonderful iridescence of these feathers that I made into earrings.

Four of these craft feathers have touches of natural blue. I don't know from what birds they came but they are beautiful--just a little package found in the craft aisle. All have dangles but you can't see the first one. I was in a hurry to take these photos. These are like the hair extensions you find today--one of the newest crazes and fun to make. You can find these at Relics.

I made this bouquet of Baby Beautiful Flower Headbands for Relics last week. It's difficult finding the right easy-stretch lace but they had some at Hobby Lobby. These were a request from the shop owner. She said people come in asking if she had them--now she does. Amy at Smore Couture also requested some so I'll make them differently for her. I bought the flowers for the SC ones Sat.

Relics also has more beaded crocheted necklace/bracelets. I enjoy making these beauties. I even made two for myself. They are light weight, simple and very feminine. Have a good day of creating something beautiful from whatever you do.

The Bride 2 B liked all these things and I am very pleased. She even gave me a tip for being so available and said she would be glad to recommend me to her friends. I think they all turned out well. Yesterday I was able to create some bracelets--to be seen tomorrow, if all goes well.

Fly With Me

I've been experimenting on the popular feather trend and made these earrings for a young friend's birthday. I even like them on me but I'm too scared to wear them. Not being a "dangly girl" very long, I find they are a bit much but I hope she likes them enough to wear them.

The feather hair extensions are the thing now so I though I'd try a few. The clips are attached. You just hide the clip in your hair and let the feather and beads dangle.

I love this one. The feather tips are a beautiful irridescent blue and the beads match.

The last three I gave to two missionary girls (10 & 16) and their mother but they all wound up on the 10-yr-old.

Of course I had to make a pink one.

Lots of fun and I intend to make more...in time. I have some commissions to complete and then I start work on filling the shops with Fall goodies--yes, already. As a matter of fact, I'm late.

What a Wild Past Few Weeks

VBS, Church Mission Trip and family visit over the 4th--all back to back. I don't believe I've ever had such consistent things to do before. Whole week, plus--ramped up VBS study and practice; VBS--5 days, left the next day for Mission Trip; Mission Trip--gone 7 days, next day family came to visit for Independence Day; today, nothing--slammed into nothing....No, I don't want to clean bathrooms, wash sheets and towels, reorganize the kitchen, put away toys, start projects that are long overdue....I think I'll just stop, drink my coffee and smell the empatiens...a while.

LOVED EVERY MINUTE!

Thank you, Lord, for the time and ability to do these wonderful things.

A Gentle Reminder

In my devotional this morning I found this verse:

"Jesus said, 'I must preach the good news of the Kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.' " Luke 4:43

That is why this week is important. Even though I'm exhausted, so was he. This is the perfect scripture for the Lord to give me this morning. Why were you sent?

Two Creations Accomplished

It's been a tiring week but a good one. Pandamania VBS is over and I hadn't caught my breath yet before I was off on another adventure. Church Missions Here I Come!

I did get to make these two flower clusters yesterday afternoon. One of my friends cancelled our appointment so I didn't take her to lunch and shopping. Just as well. I really needed to work on these and I needed some down time. Hope my client, The Bride, likes one of them. It's to be her garter for her wedding. I'll add the stretchy part when she decides. Off to more activity--then sleep----aaahhhhh.

It's All Worth It

A little girl accepted Christ as her Savior in Bible School this week. All the time, efforts and sacrifice are worth it when this happens. One more soul for Christ.

The hydrangias above were full and round when I first got them but the next year they looked like this. This plant it about 4 years old and it keeps growing but the clumps of flowers don't look like the hydrangias I know and love. I think I read something about Fairy's Crowns or something like that--some species of the plant. Do you know anything about this? Just random. My friend loves them. Wish I could dig it up and take it to her.

God is Wild About You! This is the reason for my lack of posts for the past few days. (Click on photo for a larger view.) We decorated the sanctuary on Sat. from 9:00-12:00 and have been tweeking it since. We had over 200 kids and leaders here yesterday and we had a good day even though it rained on half the kids while we were still registering them. Busy, busy and on top of that we have a funeral here today and I'm playing for it. Death does not seek convenience. The deceased would have loved this backdrop, though, so we're celebrating her life here. Onward and Upward! Thank you, Group.com for the wonderful idea and resources and especially Cheryl and Mary who organized it and all the helpers who make it a success. Thank you, God, for your gift to us.

New Rolled Roses Necklace

I finished the roses on Saturday, adding the beads and button, and sewed them into this necklace on Sunday afternoon. I wore it Sun. evening and Monday. I really like it but some comments were "That's unique" and "Hmm, that's different." I'm not sure what to think of those comments. I still like it and may keep it--not sure whether to sell these or not. Guess I'll see how the one at the shop goes and I'll put one in my Etsy shop as well, though that usually does not get much attention. I hope they go because it was fun to make. Why do all the things that are fun don't sell? Maybe one day something will catch on. Probably then I'll make so many that I'll be tired of making them. What then? Guess I can't be satisfied. Gotta work on that. Busy day what with VBS study and a funeral. I sure know how to have fun!

Pandamania

Pandas have invaded my territory. Our VBS theme is "Pandamania--God is Wild About Us" and I made these little cuties from a cardboard box. I drew them, using the pictures in my study guides for inspiration, painted them and cut them out. They will be hanging around the bamboo forest when we begin our VBS Party Time Sing and Play worship rally. Every day, now, is saturated with VBS preparation in hopes that God will send His Spirit into the hearts of the little ones there. May God be glorified.

My sister is doing very well--no blockage, pacemaker placed and she goes home today! Praise God! She's sore from being a pincushion but hopeful that the pacemaker will do its job so she can feel well again. Isn't it incredible that man can do such marvelous things--remember, "man," the creator who made you helps you make creations that help others. Awesome!
